Vehicle Description This is a genuine (138-VIN) 1968 Chevrolet Chevelle SS396 two door hardtop for sale.
Numbers matching.
The car was purchased new by a farmer in Rupert, Idaho in 1968.
My father bought the car from him in 1979, he overhauled the engine, and he gave it to me as a wedding gift in 1981.
I raced it several times in the 1980's and reliably turned 12's on the mile.
It was my daily driver until 1991, then driven weekly until 1996 when I was transferred to Japan (US Navy) a place where it could not go.
I drove it into the garage and placed it on jackstands where it has remained to this day.
I retired from the Navy in 1999 and since that time I have kept the cylinders oiled and the engine has been turned over by hand every 30 days since 1999.
The body is in superb condition with only very minor rust on the rocker panels and the rear wells.
The trim tag decodes this as a Kansas City build.
It has a numbers matching 350hp 396c.
i.
(L34).
It has an Edelbrock intake and Holley 780 carb mounted, but the original intake and carb are in the trunk, as are several boxes of NOS parts that I purchased long ago for a planned restoration.
I can no longer do that planned restoration due to my health and a lack of funds.
The original chromed valve covers still sit atop the original heads.
It has the original Muncie M20 4-Speed Manual Transmission w/original chrome shifter, original 12 Bolt rear end, a very rare tachometer/gauge dashboard showing 30,133 miles, and center console with bucket seats.
All the glass is intact and free of cracks or chips.
The headers have been removed, but I still have the original iron exhaust manifolds.
The original 'Rally' wheels are still on the car, and there are NOS beauty rings and center caps still sitting in the box.
I sanded the body in 1996 before my transfer to Japan, and replaced the red paint with a dark grey primer in preparation for storage and restoration.
My restoration plans were to return her to complete originality.
This gem needs to be restored and shown so it can be appreciated by the public.
